A study published in the journal of current glaucoma practice found that insulin can stimulate the regrowth of neural circuits in the retina. In cases where medications fail to lower intraocular pressure, people may undergo filtration surgery, also known as trabeculectomy. During this surgery, a small flap is created in the sclera (the white part of the eye), and part of the trabecular meshwork (the eye's drainage system) is removed to create an opening for fluid to drain from inside the eye. This allows the aqueous humor to bypass the normal drainage system and flow out more easily, reducing intraocular pressure and preventing further optic nerve damage.
However, this surgery carries risks, including scarring that can block the drainage opening, bleeding within the eye, infection, and, in some cases, the formation of a bleb that can grow onto the cornea. Complications may include cataracts or, in very severe cases, loss of vision.
But glaucoma doesn’t have to lead to surgeries or a life sentence of gradual vision loss.
