A keto DIET Destroyed his Libido
One of my clients had no libido, no morning wood, and was getting weaker in the gym. It turns out he was on a keto diet, which I got him off of right away. Within a day his libido skyrocketed and his strength went up in the gym. So this article will explain the reasons why keto sucks.
1. Ketones are a slower source of energy than topped off glycogen stores, therefore they do not improve performance and can actually make it worse ¹.
2. Keto reduces thyroid hormone output by reducing the conversion of T4 into T3 ². Carbohydrates, by spiking insulin, can increase thyroid hormone release by suppressing neuropeptide y in the PVN ³. Thyroid hormones have also been on the decline ⁴ and are crucial for testosterone and free testosterone especially ⁵.
3. Insulin increases expression of STAR ⁶ thus increasing steroidogenesis, which would be inhibited in ketosis. Additionally, Insulin has been inversely associated with SHBG, meaning insulin lowers SHBG ⁷. This could be through increasing thyroid hormones as mentioned above, or some additional mechanism.
4. Carbohydrates are important for reducing CRH and cortisol response to stress including exercise induced stress ⁸. Therefore, KETO could lead to higher cortisol. The effects of this can be far reaching as it compromises many organ systems and biological processes ⁹.
Therefore, prioritizing your thyroid hormones by eating carbs will allow you to feel and perform your best by prioritizing glycogen stores and testosterone levels.
